Kathmandu Metropolitan City-11 Thapathali has started to remove the unauthorized structures on the Wagmati bank. The empowered Wagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee had tried to remove these structures many years ago, claiming that Wagmati was being polluted by unauthorized construction of structures on public land in the river’s catchment area.
In order to remove these structures, the said committee had published a notice in the month of January and proceeded with the work. Kamal Aryal, information officer of the committee, informed the RAS that since the work was stopped due to the pressure of various groups, now with the help of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, the demolition of those unauthorized structures has started.
The structures of Rudreshwar Mahadev Temple, Pujari Bhavan, Kriyaputri Bhavan and Om Shanti Bhavan, which were built in that area, have been demolished. In the Thapathali area, there is a protest against those who occupied the public land on the banks of the river in the name of Sukumvasi, saying that nothing has been done on the basis of political protection. The river cleaning campaigners have also demanded the removal of those occupying the riverside land in the name of Sukumvasi.
In the capital, those who occupy the public land along the river in the name of Sukumwasi pollute the river the most. Even after years of construction of residential buildings in Ichangunarayan, the residents of Sukumvasi are not allowed to move. The demand to be able to live on the banks of the river in the heart of the capital has been made in the name of Sukumvasi.
